German Exam Guide: Goethe, telc, ÖSD and TestDaF
Compare German exams for study, family reunification or personal goals, and verify requirements with the institution you are applying to.
Goethe-Zertifikat, telc, ÖSD and TestDaF serve different purposes and levels. The certificate you need depends on the university, visa category or institution. Confirm its current acceptance rules before registering.
Family reunification and A1
Basic German may be required in some spouse reunification cases. Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1 is one exam that assesses A1 skills. Check the current official information for accepted certificates and any exemptions applicable to your case.
University and academic German
German-language programs require evidence of sufficient language ability. TestDaF, telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule and Goethe exams have different formats and scoring systems. Required levels and scores vary by university and program, so do not assume one certificate is accepted everywhere.
