Sworn Translation, Notarization and Apostille: What Is the Difference?

Translations may be requested for travel, education, legal and business matters. The translator qualification and certification required depend on the receiving institution and country.

What is a sworn translation?

In Türkiye, a sworn translator has taken an oath before a notary and works in that capacity before the relevant notary. A signature and stamp identify the translator, but do not guarantee acceptance by every institution.

When is notarization needed?

Notarization is an act performed by a notary. It is not required for every document or application. Check the instructions of the authority that will receive the document.

What does an apostille certify?

Under the Hague Apostille Convention, an apostille is a certification of the origin of certain public documents for use between participating countries. It does not certify the truth of the document content or the quality of a translation. The competent authority and required order of steps depend on the case.

Before you start

  • Obtain the current written requirements from the receiving institution.
  • Confirm rules for the original document, translation language and translator qualification.
  • Ask the competent authority about the order of notarization and apostille steps.

Arı Language Center provides information about English and German translation requests. Confirm acceptance rules with the receiving authority.
